[netCDFJava #IHC-743264]: Problems reading GRIB2 files

Greetings Jeff,

> Since there are no Java docs on ucar.grib.grib2

I do apologize for the lack of current javadocs...I am not sure what happened
there. The
best I can do today is point you to the source code (lame, I know):

https://github.com/Unidata/thredds/tree/v4.3.14

The GRIB stuff is located in the grib module, although you will likely be
interested in
this particular part:

https://github.com/Unidata/thredds/tree/v4.3.14/grib/src/main/java/ucar/grib

> and the software doesn't seem to work on GRIB files at all,

Can you explain a bit more about how it's not working? I've uploaded a copy of a
working toolsUI jar file (the one on our site is having jar signing issues):

https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/staff/sarms/toolsUI-4.3.14_snapshot.jar

Would you mind trying to open your GRIB2 file using it? Click the tab "Isop"
-> "GRIB2"
-> "GRIB2collection" and use the folder icon to load in your file. If it works,
then
netCDF-Java will work for your GRIB file.

Plans for GRIB have certainly not been dropped. A considerable amount of work
has been
put into getting grib right, which is perhaps the most major change from 4.2 to
4.3. For
example, see these series of blogs by John Caron, the lead netCDF-Java
developer:

http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/blogs/developer/en/tags/grib

Cheers,

Sean
