You're right! I was able to read these into IDV 2.3 circa 2007 (on amber). Top image is AURAMS file. Bottom image is GEMS file. VERDI fails to read either file with the message 'No dataset handler registered for 'filename'. Both are using your NetCDF-java so it appears that the problem is VERDI-specific.
