I would use SFCPLOT since it already has the capability you are looking
for.  Working with PTDISP directly can be done, but it will be pretty
messy.

Hmm...  Maintenance of the XCD decoders has essentially been the provenance
of UW/SSEC.  Given that they are working on a rewrite of the XCD functionality
and hope to be releasing it in the not too distant future, I don't think that
they would be eager to make modifications on the current decoders.
