Interesting indeed.  I would tend to agree, but, then again, I love
the mountains more than the ocean :-)

My sister lives outside of Ashville (in Brevard).  I have never been
there myself, but I plan on visiting sometime in the not too distant
future.

This may be all that is needed for you to use Unidata McIDAS.  Do
you have an ncsu.edu email address?  If yes, you should register
in the Unidata website using that email address.  You should then
be able to get access to Unidata McIDAS.  If not, I can all your
ncsu.edu email address to our McIDAS exceptions list, and that will
give you access to the McIDAS download.

This may be the cause, but I run the IDV in a CentOS 64-bit
virtual machine in VMware, and things don't take that long to run.
I tried the combination in my Windows 7
environment, and it ran in about a second.
