It turns out to be useful in ADDE to have "super" datasets that are composed of
other datasets that are defined. I assume that this is what you mean by
datasets
like:

GFS-AKPS 99999 GFS - Alaska/PS; forecast and analysis
GFS-AKPSLRES 99999 GFS - Alaska/PS; low resolution
GFS-AKPSSSIF 99999 GFS - Alaska/PS; analysis - final run
GFS-ALL 99999 GFS - All Global Forecast System grids
GFS-GLME 99999 GFS - Global/Merc; forecast and analysis (thinned)
GFS-GLMELRES 99999 GFS - Global/Merc; low resolution
GFS-GLMENS 99999 GFS - Global/Merc; forecast and analysis (thinned)
GFS-HIME 99999 GFS - Hawaii/Merc; forecast and analysis
GFS-HIMELRES 99999 GFS - Hawaii/Merc; low resolution
GFS-HIMESSIF 99999 GFS - Hawaii/Merc; analysis - final run
GFS-NHPS 99999 GFS - N Hemi/PS; forecast and analysis
GFS-NHPSLRES 99999 GFS - N Hemi/PS; low resolution
GFS-NHPSSSIF 99999 GFS - N Hemi/PS; analysis - final run
GFS-NWME170 99999 GFS - NW Quad/Merc; low resolution (T170)
GFS-NWME62 99999 GFS - NW Quad/Merc; low resolution (T62)
GFS-PRPSLRES 99999 GFS - Puerto Rico/PS; low resolution
GFS-PRPSSSIF 99999 GFS - Puerto Rico/PS; analysis - final run
GFS-USLC 99999 GFS - CONUS/LC
GFS-USPS 99999 GFS - CONUS/PS; forecast and analysis
GFS-USPS2 99999 GFS - CONUS/PS; double resolution
GFS-USPSLRES 99999 GFS - CONUS/PS; low resolution
GFS-USPSSSIF 99999 GFS - CONUS/PS; analysis - final run

The definitions for all of the datasets in the list except GFS-ALL should
be mutually exclusive. GFS-ALL is the union of all of the other datasets.

Defining a dataset that is the union of other datasets is long used practice
in ADDE. For instance, the RTPTSRC dataset is composed of:

dsinfo.k P RTPTSRC

Dataset Names of Type: POINT in Group: RTPTSRC

Name NumPos Content
------------ ------ --------------------------------------
AIRCRAFT 10 Real-Time Aircraft data
GFSMOS 10 Real-Time GFS Model Output Statistics
NAMMOS 10 Real-Time NAM Model Output Statistics
NGMMOS 10 Real-Time NGM MOS data
PROF6MIN 10 Real-Time 6-Minute Profiler data
PROFHOURLY 10 Real-Time Hourly Profiler data
PTSRCS 120 All point data in MDXX files
SFCHOURLY 10 Real-Time SFC Hourly
SHIPBUOY 10 Real-Time Ship and Buoy data
SYNOPTIC 10 Real-Time SYNOPTIC data
UPPERMAND 10 Real-Time Upper Air (Mandatory)
UPPERSIG 10 Real-Time Upper Air (Significant)

DSINFO -- done

RTPTSRC/PTSRCS is the union of all of the other datasets. With it, you can get
a quick overview of what elements are accessible in all of the subsets:

Last comment:

The names of the RTGRIBS datasets were specified (chosen) by SSEC. Since SSEC
created
the set above first, I decided to adopt it instead of creating a new list for
Unidata
sites. It is my hope/desire that every site making model data publically
available via
ADDE use a standardized set of names for the datasets.

Cheers,

Tom
