McIDAS definitely has the needed pieces.  The goal is to find an
application that is usable/adaptable for your and other's needs.  I see
that a McIDAS user in Spain, Miguel Martinez <address@hidden>, has
responded with information I will pursue:

  In order to calculate zenith angles for radiative transfer studies(I
  work with the radiative transfer model RTTOV for MSG, MODIS and GOES
  satellites), I have used the NAVCALC command.  There is a mode you can
  obtain the zenith or view angle for a sector or all image (read the
  help).  The output of NAVCALC command is ASCII; with some UNIX command
  (grep,
  ..) you can filter the header and tailer.
  Once you have the data, then I had converted to AREA using a procedure
  (PV-WAVE or IDL) that creates it with the data.
  
  Also, we have internal program (from another people) to calculate the
  sun angle.

NAVCALC is part of core McIDAS, so this is very promising.  You can get
help for NAVCALC in McIDAS using HELP NAVCALC.  You can get the more
extensive Users Guide help from the Unidata McIDAS web pages:

I will follow-up with Miguel about the other routine that he
