As I understand things, shared memory in Linux is simply the combination
of physical RAM and swap available on your system.  Reconfiguring this
would then mean that you would need to either add more RAM or add another
swap partition.  It seems like adding RAM is the easier route since the
other alternative typically involves a repartitioning of the hard
disk.
