20030702: LDM-6 upgrade for McGill

Hi Alan,

I tried to upgrade maelstrom2.meteo.mcgill.ca to the latest Unidata
LDM-6 release, but was thwarted in my efforts by a seemingly very old
version of the C compiler (that had a lot of trouble with 'const'
declarations in the LDM code) and entry points needed by LDM routines
not being found in the shared system C library (the entry points that
were not found are snprintf and vsnprintf).

I even tried building a binary distribution on our IRIX 6.5 machine and
seeing if I could get it to run, but it didn't work probably because
our version of IRIX is more recent than yours.

The only thing we can think to try is loading of a gcc development
environment on maelstrom2. Is this possible, or would it be too
much of a headache?

Or, is there another machine with more recent compilers on which the
LDM-6 could be built and run?

We are, of course, open to any suggestions that you may have.

Tom
