[IDV #ZSW-765017]: IDV 5.0u1 on Mac OS X (10.9)

You are right. The full explanation is the OS X IDV installers (< 5.0u1) were
having trouble on some systems. The installers are themselves Java applications
that used to require Apple Java 6 before 5.0u1. So we migrated to a new
deployment plan where the installer relies on the same Java 7 JRE that the
actual IDV does. (Java 6 was end-of-lifed a while back so this was a prudent
move anyway.) This strategy required us to use the OS X Java 7 JRE that is
provided by install4j. (INSTALL4j is the third party software we have always
used to generate the IDV Installers.) We could not point to our own custom
location (unfortunately b/c this would have solved some problems for us). We had
to use theirs. This install4j JRE has unfortunately come with its own set of
problems. There were security issues, and now I have discovered by your esupport
that there are path problems too. Apparently install4j has changed paths that
are customary (even though from the top level they look the same!).  This
problem was masked by other java distributions on my OS X machine during my own
testing. That is the full explanation.

Unfortunately, you have been exposed to some nasty details, but now you may have
undertanding the complexity of deploying the IDV on a variety of operating
systems and machine that can all have various idiosyncrasies. Thanks for
reporting this important problem to us in a timely manner. We'll try to fix this
first thing tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience.
