Dear Peter,
First off, please update your IDV version to 3.1. See
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/downloads/idv/3_1/index.jsp
If you still see problems, you could try increasing the amount of memory used
by the IDV. See other performance tuning tips at:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/IDV/docs/userguide/misc/PerformanceTuning.html
