This shows that the LDM running on idd.unidata.ucar.edu is _not_ being 
contacted.

This indicates that the LDM runing on gale.unidata.uar.edu is not being
contacted.

I checked the LDM logs on gale.unidata.ucar.edu, and I did not see
any indication that your LDM tried to contact it.  Since our firewall
is open for inbound port 388 traffic, this would seem to suggest that
there is a firewall somewhere at/near UChicago that is blocking outbound
traffic to port 388.  This surmise can be double checked by running
the following:

telnet gale.unidata.ucar.edu 388

NB:

- this assumes that 'telnet' is installed on your Ubuntu VM

  'telnet' is not installed by default on most Linux systems anymore
  as it is little used (folks use SSH), so you may have to install
  it (as 'root' using apt-get install telnet).

The 'telnet' test will support/refute the notion that your 'notifyme'
test is trying to use port 388 on the upstream host (gale.unidata.ucar.edu).
This _should_ be the case since your installation looks good now, but
I want to check to make sure.

I'm heading into work now, so I won't be available for follow-ups for
about 45 minutes (I live in the foothills above Boulder)...
