Graeme,

For "reliable/critical" data (eg Unidata is not able to guarantee any
quality or reliability to universities), you might try contacting one of 
the data vendors like Unisys, WSI, Planetary Data, etc. Other sources might 
be the Weather Underground (wunderground.com), or Wxnet etc.
