Subject: gigabit ethernet tests

Between daffy (linux) and shemp (solaris x86) on our local switch, we can
sustain packet speeds in excess of 300Mbps -- not what I'd hoped, but at
least three times fast ethernet speeds. Between daffy and/or shemp and
our fair motherlode, a lousy 80Mbps which is no faster than what we were
getting already. This might be due to packet filtering speed limits on
the routers.

Note - raw TCP throughput shows the Solaris x86 TCP stack and/or hardware
drivers to be slower than Solaris SPARC or Linux by a fair margin.
