[GEMPAK #VQV-479891]: GEMPAK 5.6.F

John,

I have uploaded the 5.6.F source tarfile at:
ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/gempak/gempak_upc5.6.f.tar.gz

The README file for the distribution follows. Note that due to changes in
operating systems since
the original release, the source code may or may not correctly compile/run with
current OS
configurations. All bugs etc in the distribution at that time will still be
present as well,
but your comparison vs your code changes is of course what your interested in.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The distribution has been built and tested on the following platforms using
the vendor supplied Ansi-C and Fortran77 compilers:
        Solaris 5.6, 5.8 & 5.9
        Solaris X86 5.9
        AIX 5.1
        HP-UX B.11.00 E
        Digital Unix OSF/1 V5.1
        IRIX/IRIX64 6.5.20m
        Linux Red Hat 7.3, 8.0, 9.0 (openmotif, gcc, g77)
        FreeBSD 4.7, 4.8 (openmotif)
Darwin (GUI and decoders only--- no message queues)

Here are the general source download and building instructions:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
You must have MOTIF installed on your system as well as vendor supported
Fortran77 and Ansi C compilers.

To build Gempak from source, download and unpack the distribution into
a clean directory. Edit the csh file Gemenviron in the top directory
and define the NAWIPS environmental variable to be the directory you
unpacked into. Source the Gemenviron variables into your csh
environment to define $NAWIPS and all the tree locations relative to
NAWIPS. Then, if your system is standard configuration for Solaris,
Solaris for Intel (X86) IRIX, OSF/1, AIX, Linux, HPUX- you should be able
to just type "make all", followed by "make install" when the compilation
finishes.
When building under FreeBSD, use the "-i" flag for make to avoid time stamp
conflicts between object files and library archives, eg "make -i all".
If you have libraries in non-standard places, then the
$NAWIPS/config/Makeinc.xxxxx
file for your OS would have to be modified. You should not modify the
optimization levels since some compilers don't work well with aggressive
optimization (Especially Digital UNIX).

Binary distributions are provided for several configurations. See the
appropriate
README instructions for installing a binary distribution. It is not necessary
to download the source distribution if you plan on installing the binary
distribution. All tables, files, and configurations necessary for running
the binary distribution are included in those tarfiles.

Documentation for GEMPAK can be found as PDF files under
the $NAWIPS/doc/User_Guide directory, as well as online at:
http://my.unidata.ucar.edu/content/software/gempak/tutorial/
I have provided release notes for GEMPAK 5.6 at:
http://my.unidata.ucar.edu/content/software/gempak/GEMPAK5.6/

All users that use Gempak should source Gemenviron into their csh
environment to define the Gempak variables and add the executable
directory into their path. Once the distribution is installed,
you can edit the data directory locations defined in Gemenviron-
but thats not a priority for building.

Please consult the online support archives and documentation for questions
about the distribution and any problems you may have.
You may also wish to subscribe yourself to the gembud email list at:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/mailinglist/mailing-list-form.html

Announcements about the GEMPAK distribution, including new distributions,
patches, and feature enhancements are made through the above list. Also,
if you have information or need to find other users who may have
experience with a specific data set, then you are encouraged to
use the gembud email list which is composed of fellow GEMPAK users in our
community.

The "dc" realtime data decoders are designed to be used with the datastreams
available through the Unidata IDD for decoding the data into GEMPAK format
as it arrives. Refer to the LDM web pages for the installation of LDM and
requirements for getting connected to the IDD. Examples of LDM pqact.cont
pattern/action entries for the various types of data for the GEMPAK decoders
are provided under $NAWIPS/ldm/etc/. Run $NAWIPS/ldm/etc/gen_pqact.csh to
create LDM prodduct actions entries for use with current IDD data streams.
