David,

OK, that solves the short term usage problem.
I guess the test if you downloaded the source would be to
check the time stamps on the files:
$GARPHOME/gempak/pthgt.f, pvprof.f, and others.

These should be Aug 5, 2005  which was right before I made the 5.8.3a release.
I checked the download record, and it appeared that you downloaded
the source release in the past week, so unless the garp libraries
on your system were being searched from the old distribution, or 
make clean wasn't done, the source should be fixed for those routines 
which did have to be updated for compatibility with the new GEMPAK grid access
methods.
