Werner,

To download GEMPAK from the web page, use your login and password
(not gbuddy) that you create when you register at the
registration link:
http://my.unidata.ucar.edu/user.php?op=new_user

The click on the download software link:
http://my.unidata.ucar.edu/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=3


Both of the above links are included from the GEMPAK web page at:

The DEV=GF driver requires an X window. The DEV=GIF driver does not 
require an X server to connect to. The GIF driver uses software rendering
whereas the GF driver can use the X server fonts and drawing routines.
