Yes, thats the bug NCEP introduced when they added the template file naming.

Previously, before templates, you always has to enter the name of the
data file in GDFILE. Now, you can enter an alias, such as "eta"
or "eta|020220|0000". However, the name of the file that is stored internally by
the "//" short name is the actual file that is opened. So, later
when you try to use "te", GEMPAK check for the variable in its internal
list. But, the name of the file in the list is the name of the data file
expanded to 2002022012_eta211.gem. So, it sees that that is not the
name of the file being specified in GDFILE. 

I fixed this in 5.6.f. Just trying to get the release out....in between
computers going south (3 this week).
