OK. I was correct in my suspicion that you did not get the ERS-1 and ERS-2 Mean wind data
from us (the Unidata Program Center/UCAR). You should send your questions about these
data and their documentation to dssweb@xxxxxxxxx Questions on netCDF use/building/etc.
