20041214: requesting comments on MODIS "tearing" effect at scan edges

Hi Russ,

One of my use is inquiring about what, if anything, can be done about
the "tearing" effect at the edge of MODIS imagery. The effect I am
referring to is best seen in a sample image:

http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/content/staff/tom/gifs/aqua_hkm_200412141750.gif

In this image you can see the quality go from bad on the left hand side
to good on the right side (as you move more towards the center of the swath).

I remember you telling me that creating a navigation module for the
MODIS data was a pain because of something that looks what I am trying
to describe. Greg's comment (he is sitting here as I write you this
note) is that MODIS imagery you can see on web sites like the one for
CIMSS never show this kind of tearing effect. The question is if
anything can be done on the user side to mitigate this tearing effect,
or is it just something folks have to live with?

Perhaps the problem is related to the imagery on the server? We are
looking at data being make available by NASA on NANUK.EOSDIS.NASA.GOV.
The command used to display the image in the GIF was:

IMGDISP NANUK/Aqua_HKM BAND=1 TIME=17:50 LAT=37 65

Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Tom
