Harry,

Even though Chiz already answered this from the GEMPAK perspective, I offer
the following.

>Given the delays in the NOAAPORT NEXRAD distribution, has anyone thought of
>having a central site ftp the NOAAPORT data aod injest it into the IDD?

We have not pursued this here at the UPC, and I have not had any
interactions with sites about doing this. The main reason that we have
not pursued this was that the NWS was _supposed_ to put the new
products into NOAAPORT already, and we have not been led to believe
that they would be holding off for so long.

>Also, I notice that the data on the FTP server is NOT compressed, so is yet
>another decoder is necessary? Or can Gempak and McIDAS handle these files as
>is?

I know that McIDAS can handle the data 'cause I FTPed both an N0R and
NET product and served them through ADDE. Like GEMPAK, McIDAS can
handle the NEXRAD Level III in a number of formats. Given that the
files on the NWS FTP server look like the NIDS products that we were
getting from WSI previously, and given that both the GEMPAK and McIDAS
data access routines are based on your original decoders for WSI data
(slightly modified), it is not suprising that both can handle the
data packaged in the same way.
