20010614: Re: FW: GODAE

Hi Dave,

As mentioned in our previous exchange regarding WSI access and use of COAMPS, the LDM is freely available to anybody, including international sites, but Unidata restricts LDM support to the Unidata university community. Of course, the Web site provides a lot of LDM support information at:

<http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/ldm/index.html>

Regarding the data, FNMOC is the provider of the data and it is really up to you as a representative for FNMOC to determine if it is in your best interest to serve the data to this group in London.

You might want to keep in mind that there are certain guidelines, based on the WMO Resolution 40, which can be found at:

<http://www.nws.noaa.gov/im/wmocovr.htm#contents>
and
<http://www.nws.noaa.gov/oso/addata.html>

As I mentioned previously, the issues of operational use and liability are things to be aware of too.

Some time soon, it would be interesting to find out from you how many and who are receiving the NOGAPS and COAMPS models from you.

Thanks,
Linda

Hi Linda,
We would like to endorse this usage of NOGAPS. I know LDM is primarily a
North American program but I think this would be an appropriate and welcome
addition. Thoughts?
Best regards,
Dave D

Hi David, I'm the ONR Ocean Atmosphere and Space representative in London.
One of my tasks over here has been to try to generate more evaluation and
feedback on USN METOC products, hence have been promoting the GODAE server.
I am going to a meeting next week for the European Commission, who funds
research projects on operational forecasting. Many of the ocean research
efforts suffer from lack of wind forcing, for numerous reasons, most related
to the fact that ECMWF has too stringent a limitations on use, and the
National agencies all want to sell it to their own countrymen (!).

Question: I've perused the LDM web-site before, but I don't see anything
about international subscriptions to the service, are these allowed? If I
wrote a note endorsing a certain international groups access to NOGAPs via
LDM, would this suffice for them to subscribe? Some guidance would be
helpful,

Thanks,

Reg.
