Linda,

I thought you should know that Richard Chinman has been communicating with
several groups within UCAR/NCAR to see if they wanted to continue the WSI
service. As noted below, there has been interest among some of the groups
to continue various services, e.g, the NOWAD mosaic. I'm forwarding this
note to you as a last chance for Unidata to contribute toward the service.
Do we need the data for anything?

The Unidata Program Center (i.e., us) doesn't need the data _unless_ we
could strike a deal with WSI that would allow us to distribute it to our
users (IDD, ADDE, DODS(?)). I am sure that this question has not formerly
been asked of WSI (Maria P.), but perhaps it should be.

My purpose in forwarding the note was to find out if there was any reason Unidata needed the data for testing or comparison purposes with the NOAAport NIDS-type data stream for awhile.

It's pretty obvious to me that WSI would NOT consider providing the service to the community. They are in business to make $$$.

The things of interest would be:

o if they would even consider the idea (not likely)
o how much it would cost (lots)

Richard,

Hold the presses on RAP's need for WSI data.

Roy Rasmussen just called me and stated that we definately need to
continue getting the single-site data as well as the mosaic data.
Roy is willing to pay for the single-site portion alone until
May 1, 2001 (winter season for the WSDDM project). Please do not
cancel the single-site service until May 1.

OK. Thanks for the information. There might also be a continuing need
for the single site data at JOSS and COMET. Both groups are discussing
their needs now...

I have been given assurances from WSI that as long as we make a serious
commitment to signing a contract (even if the signing happens after 1
Jan 01) for the WSI feed to continue that we should expect to keep
getting what we ask for (e.g., the mosaics and single site data).

I hope to notify WSI soon of our data needs and commitment to a formal
contract. There are discussions occurring between Bob Gall and Rit
Carbone to pay for the mosaics (only) for the next year. If other
groups are going to use the mosaics then they too should "ante" up.

Roy's need for the single site data and his willingness to pay for it is
good to know.

I am copying this email to the "NIDS" community at-large at UCAR to
"beat the bushes" for any other NIDS users and payment contributors.

Thank you.

Richard

Thanks.
