A metric for netCDF usage
To compare use of netCDF in different domains (for example .edu, .gov,
.com, and top-level country domains), we use the number of web pages
per million web pages in each domain of interest that include the word
"netCDF" (with any capitalization), on all web pages indexed by Google.
Call this metric nGh/Mwp (netCDF Google hits per million web pages).

We have omitted from the table above any domains with 10 or fewer
netCDF hits or with fewer than 5 million web pages. For completeness,
the omitted information (which is of dubious value because of the
small sample) is available in a separate table.
For interpreting the numbers in the table above, it may be useful to know
how many web pages from both of the domains unidata.ucar.edu and
ucar.edu are included in the .edu counts for "netCDF" hits. According
to Google, there were 188,000 web pages from unidata.ucar.edu, of
which 45,500 mentioned netCDF, and there were 1.26 million ucar.edu
web pages, or which 196,000 mentioned netCDF.
Another metric of interest is the number of published books
that include mention of netCDF. A lower bound on this number, as of
August 19, 2006, is 78, found by using the search term "netcdf" at
books.google.com. The disciplines represented in these books are
