Community Outreach

Model Data Project

An announcement was sent to the modeling community and the Unidata community email lists during December, 1998, to inform them of the opportunity to access model data through CONDUIT (Cooperative Opportunity for NCEP Data Using IDD Technology).

NEXRAD Level II Data Access & Distribution

Coordination with the University of Oklahoma and the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS) has continued. The Collaborative Radar Acquisition Field Test (CRAFT), is using Unidata's LDM technology, augmented with code from Harry Edmon, to distribute level II radar data.

The latest development is the recertification of Radar Interface Data Distribution System (RIDDS), required for access to Level II data, is scheduled to include the LDM for Y2K compliance. Furthermore, the future "open systems" (the follow on system to RIDDS) certification will also include the LDM.

The Oklahoma City and Fort Worth radars are equipped with this technology and OU is receiving the data. By May, 1999, the plan includes Tulsa and Fort Smith radars.

Other Data Access

Continued coordination with the Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL) is nearing the time for announcement of the availability of (DRAFT ACARS Data Information) ACARS. The OFFICIAL announcement of availability of ACARS will be made to the broad Unidata university community when the data service is ready at FSL using the LDM.

Case Studies

I gave a presentation on COMET Case Study Access and Beyond at the 1999 AMS Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas. Currently, there are 16 case studies fully loaded and made available for on line searching, browsing and ordering, through the collaborative arrangement with COMET, Unidata and JOSS.

Jeff Weber, a graduate student and user of the case studies, has been working one-half time on the case study project.

MetApps Task Force

The MetApps Task force has been making some progress. Charlie Murphy, Chairman, has provided a brief status report. The group has been working via email communication with the Unidata technical staff as development of the future applications continues to evolve.

Mike Wright is working on implementation of a collaborative tool to facilitate interactions between the MetApps and the Unidata technical staff as they develop Java applications.

DODS

DODS continues to consume about 70% of Ethan Davis' time.

The DODS Developers Meeting took place on 25-27 January 1999.
