Working with Richard Hogue and Ekaterina Radeva, Canadian
Meteorological Services, on distribution of the Global Environmental
Multiscale (GEM)
Model, using LDM technology. Ekaterina, the technical contact, is
making great progress with testing currently being performed.
As an outgrowth of CONDUIT, the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and
Oceanography Center (FNMOC) is offering the NOGAPS
data. Plans and policies
are underway to use the LDM from FNMOC to make the data sets
available to
the Unidata university and USWRP community. The USWRP working group will
assist in defining the initial data sets for availability to the
community.
Difax broadcast will probably end Sept 30, 2000. The products can be
created with gridded data. The NWS will provide a six-month sunsetting
time frame.
Access to data from the AIRNOW Empact program at EPA is moving slowly.
Each state has
different regulations and data requirements. Steps are being taken by
the EMPACT group to break through the barriers, but they are moving very
slow.
Information from the AMS meeting includes:
Jim Fenix, Chief of Office of Systems Operations, NWS (discussions
about distribution of Level III (NIDS) radar data to Unidata as a test site
using the LDM)
Louis Uccellini, Director, National Center for Environmental
Prediction (NCEP) (discussions about CONDUIT, e.g., reliability issues
need to be satisfied, broadening the community of users when stable)
Steve Chiswell and I attended the NOAAPort/FOS meeting conducted by
NOAA/NWS during the AMS meeting
International-A coordinating agency, Finland Limited, is the
coordinating agency for 12 European members tasked with collecting information on data
difficulties, and acts as liaison to the WMO Council and other agencies on
environmental data access issues.
NIDS- (Level III) beginning Oct, 2000 will introduce various options;
Dedicated FTP (requires T1)- large set of WSR-88D products
Multicast Open Group Broadcast of WSR-88D Products-large set of
WSR-88D products
NOAAport-set of WSR-88D products to meet NWS operational needs
NWSTG Servers-Subset of available WSR-88D products
Floyd Hauth, Chairman of the AMS/IIPS
(discussion about the success of the Unidata special session, I am invited to participate on
the AMS/IIPS program committee for
2001) Some interesting statistics from the AMS 2000 meeting in Long
Beach are:
3000 attendees
700 attended the IIPS sessions
1600 presentations
number of exhibits down by 12
The next AMS scheduled meetings include:
2001 - Albuquerque, NM
