NOAA Strategic Planning Constituent Meeting

April 19, 2001

Washington, DC

Linda Miller, External Liaison

See: <http://www.constituentaffairs.noaa.gov/> for meeting presentations, constituent recommendations and summaries.

Scott Gudes, Acting Under Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere/Administrator and Deputy Under Secretary, provided opening remarks and a short overview of NOAA activities. A question looming over the meeting was who would be appointed as the next NOAA Administrator. Scott indicated that the decision had not yet been made.

NOAA is an organization under the Department of Commerce (Don Evans, Secretary). NOAA has an operating budget of approximately 3.2 Billion and employs approximately 12.500 people. Within NOAA are the following line offices:

Concurrent workshops were held in the areas of Weather, Climate, Marine Transportation and NOAA Employees. I participated in the Weather workshop, but noted in my evaluation materials that NOAA should consider merging Weather and Climate for at least half of the time, due to some of the needs being similar between the two groups (particularly in data access).

Breakout groups were created (approximately 8 per table) with the resulting recommendations of priorities that NOAA should consider for future planning. Those recommendations to be provided in the URL provided above.
