COMET, funded by the National Weather Service (NWS) and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), has created meteorological data case studies to facilitate advanced meteorological education for Scientific Operations Officers (SOOs) in the modernized NWS forecast offices. In addition, COMET case studies have been a desirable component of the Unidata university community for some time. However, ease-of-use issues, vis-a-vis 8mm tapes, have decreased the feasibility of using these case studies in classrooms, laboratories and forecast offices.

A need existed to provide a method to access and retrieve COMET case studies through a user-friendly interface by a broad community of users. CODIAC, a Web based data management system, created by UCAR's, Office of Field Projects Support (OFPS), offers the means to enhance the existing COMET case study distribution system. Tools for converting and displaying the data in a common display and analysis system are being developed and feedback is being solicited from a broader case study user community. This project leverages the resources available among COMET, OFPS, and Unidata to broaden the community of case study users, provide improved access and retrieval tools, and augment existing datasets with community collected data.
