IDD Status Report: March 2001

Prepared by Jeff Weber
For Unidata Users Committee
March 2001

Motherlode continues to be Unidata's premier IDD server. The motherlode machine is a Sun E450, with 4 450 Mhz processors, 4 GB of memory, redundant power supplies, and 500 GB of disk. It sits on the network directly connected to the vBNS by one router. It's currently running LDM version 5.1.2. and has proven to be quite stable. The top ring of the IDD continues to be
motherlode.ucar... -> datoo.lsu... -> sleet.wunderground... -> ssec.wisc... -> motherlode.ucar...

The UPC sent out an e-mail regarding reporting statistics. This generated a large response from sites that had not been reporting statistics, or had discovered problems doing so. Most who had questions, or were not reporting, responded back. This has enhanced and made more reliable the FOS topology page

At the same time we requested that sites check the sitelist URL

http://unidata.ucar.edu/projects/idd/sitelist.html

This generated much correspondence as many "ad hoc" connections had been made without notifying the UPC as well as many site administrators have moved on and been replaced. This was done in hopes of making the sitelist a more useful and timely document for sites to use in evaluating their connection and contacting other LDM/IDD participants.

The addition of NEXRAD data products has been successful. No major bottlenecks have developed with the additional data. I attribute most of this ease of use to sites being prudent in what they request. The UPC suggested that sites request no more than 3 radars at a time, or limit the products received if requesting more than 3 radar sites. An additional topology was created for the NNEXRAD feedtype

http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/projects/idd/nexradFeed.html

as well as a "How to" page for receiving NNEXRAD feedtype data

http://unidata.ucar.edu/packages/ldm/feedtypes/howto-nnexrad.html

The UPC has added 9 new sites to the IDD topology and changed the status [ name change or feed change ] of 22 sites. A network "status" page including all major networks and most sub-networks has been created to aid in diagnosing network problems regarding latencies, packet loss, etc. This page can be found at
