1.9 What's New Since the Previous Release?

This Guide documents the 4.0 release of netCDF, which introduces a new storage format, netCDF-4/HDF5, while maintaining full backward compatibility.

New features available with netCDF-4/HDF5 files include:

• The user of groups to organize datasets.
• New unsigned integer data types, 64-bit integer types, and a string type.
• A user defined compound type, which can be constructed by users to match a C struct or other arbitrary organization of types.
• A variable length array type.
• Support for parallel I/O.
