9.6 Future Directions for CF
An effort is currently underway to expand the coverage of CF conventions.
Conventions under consideration for addition to CF include
- Model ensembles
- Structured grids (staggered, nested, triangular, mosaic)
- Structured collections of profiles, time series, and trajectories
- Discovery information
- Compliance categories
- Discipline-specific modules and dialects
- References to external data and standards for multifile datasets
- Use of the netCDF-4 data model and format
Other future directions include
- Implementing CF metadata conventions for other file formats
(besides netCDF)
- libcf: Supplying both data providers and
application developers with library support for using CF
