Unidata McIDAS-X
Supported Platforms

Unidata McIDAS-X,-XCD is supported on a variety of Unix and Unix-like platforms. Platform specifications are currently as follows:

Supported Workstations

The UPC builds and tests McIDAS-X using vendor-supplied compilers for the majority of the platforms it supports. The gcc/f2c/mcfc and gcc/g77 combinations should work on all of the supported platforms, but since we have not tested it in any but the AIX, Solaris, and Linux environments, we can not guarantee this.

Unidata McIDAS-X and -XCD Versions 7.x have been successfully built at the UPC on the platforms in the table that follows. McIDAS-XCD has been thoroughly tested at the UPC on only two of these platforms, Sun Solaris SPARC and Sun Solaris x86.

1. We believe that Unidata McIDAS-X will build and run successfully under AIX 4.2, RedHat Linux 4.x/5.x/6.x, and Solaris 5.[45] but we have no way of testing this.

2. SSEC tests McIDAS-X on HP-UX 11.11. Since the UPC does not have a 11.11 machine that can be used for testing, we defer to SSEC's judgement of its suitability.

3. cc under FreeBSD is a link to GNU gcc; f77 is GNU g77 but there is no link identifying this fact.

4. Building with GNU gcc and g77 is possible with Unidata McIDAS versions 7.803 and later.

Workstation Requirements

The following are requirements for a workstation running Unidata McIDAS by itself. The recommended minimum configuration will grow the more Unidata packages you run on your workstation.

Software Requirements

X Windows

Unidata McIDAS-X and -XCD require that you be running an X11R5/X11R6 compliant X Window system.

Compressed tar files for X11R5/X11R6 can be found under the pub directory of anonymous FTP at ftp.x.org (or any one of a number of mirror sites). Compressed tar files for X11R5 can be found in the pub/R5 directory; compressed tar files for X11R6 can be found in the pub/R6 directory.

System V Curses

McIDAS-X will not build on systems that do not provide System V-compliant curses include files and library. All of the systems listed in the table above include a System V-compliant implementation of curses.

A System V-compliant curses package can be FTPed from the pub/gnu/ncurses directory of anonymous FTP at prep.ai.mit.edu.

Tcl/Tk

The Function Key Menu system and GUIs provided with Unidata McIDAS-X depend on scripts that use the freely available Tcl/Tk package developed by John Ousterhout formerly of Ajuba Solutions. To reduce the number of packages that users need to install, Tcl/Tk comes bundled with SSEC and Unidata McIDAS-X releases.

netCDF

McIDAS-X contains server code that allows access to a growing variety of netCDF data files. To reduce the number of packages that users need to install, netCDF comes bundled with SSEC and Unidata McIDAS-X releases.

HDF

McIDAS-X contains server code that allows access to MODIS image data in HDF format. To reduce the number of packages that users need to install, HDF 4.1r4 comes bundled with SSEC and Unidata McIDAS-X releases.
