The LibCF library was developed at Unidata starting in 2007.
The intent was to provide a home for geo-science specific functionality, which does not fit into the more general netCDF library.
In 2008/2009 the first set of GRIDSPEC functions were added at Unidata, based on the code of Zhi Liang at GFDL.
In 2010 the second set of GRIDSPEC functions, with the Princeton API, were added by Dave Kindig, Alex Pletzer, and Andrey Sobol.
