IDV Vertical Cross Section Plots

You can include vertical cross section plots, with full 3D map-located orientation, in HTML pages with the IDV. These displays are fully interactive 3D IDV displays, with zoom, pan, contour level value choices, time animation, and choice of colors and maps.

Under the displays below, select a time and numerical weather prediction model for the data source. The Eta and RUC model output cover North America, and the AVN output is global.

After selecting the time and model, click on Create Cross Section. Ten seconds or more may be needed to retrieve the data and create the display. Data is coming from a remote Unidata THREDDS server.

Once the display is complete, many IDV controls are available. You can:

Move the cross section end points by dragging on the ends of the control line (colored squares) with the left mouse button. Rotate the 3D display in this page by dragging with the right mouse button. Zoom in by shift-up arrow; zoom out by shift-dwon arrow. Pan by ctrl plus left and right arrow keys. Restore initial overhead view with crtl-r.

For more display control, right-button click on the label "truewindvectors Wind plan view Level 1000.0." A menu will appear; click on "Properties." Another window will appear, the actual Display Control for the display. You can change or edit color tables. You can change contour levels. Click on "Clear" to remove the Display Control.

See the IDV Help facility for how to do all controls. Click on Help in the main IDV menu, and in the User's Guide look for topics titled General Controls -> Time Animation Controls, General Controls -> The Maps Menu, and so on.

Automatic Cross Sections with controls in a web page.

You can put a Display Control in an HTML page. If you use a cross-section display control, the cross section is in both the main IDV display and the Display control.

Here is the display control for a cross section display of relative humidity. One cross section is in the main IDV window, while the control is in this page with another cross section display.

Note that this display was made automatically - you did not need to specify data. That was done by the author of the web page. The display is made when the web page is viewed.

Pan this display by dragging the right mouse button. Zoom by dragging the right mouse button up and down while pressing the shift key.

Move the location of the cross section in the main display, dragging the colored square corner points with the main mouse button.

Rotate the main 3D view by dragging the right mouse button over it, to see the cross section there.
