6.2 Mapping Program Exercises for GEMPAK

Mapping Program Exercises!!

Exercises:
  1. Now let's try the sounding (upper air) mapping program, SNMAP. For August 18, 1991, plot the 12 UTC standard upper air chart for the U.S. at 500 mb using the Hurricane Bob data. Set up the data in this format:

brbk position one, tmpc position two, hght
postion four, dwpc position six

Now plot the standard chart on 300 K theta surface. Plot chart on 6000 m height surface.

    Answer:

  2. Construct a standard surface station chart on a high resolution county map for Colorado for August 19, 1991 at 12 UTC. (Hint: remember the hidden variable $MAPFIL) Here's the format of the standard surface chart:

    brbk-1,tmpf-2,wsym-3,
pmsl-4,3 hour pressure change-5, dwpf-6, 3 hr precip-7

Now, represent the winds as filled barbs in knots of the default size, but twice as thick. Also, ignore calm winds, and have the barbs start on the sky symbol (Hint: See the phelp for SFPARM). Try increasing the data area (using the "-" qualifier) and decreasing the graphics area (using the "*" qualifier) so that the data completely fills the map, including the edges.
