Importing Data into GEMPAK Format

We've already discussed using the GEMPAK edit programs to import data into GEMPAK format. One thing that must be done for research data sets which contain special PAM, MESONET, Aircraft, Dropsonde, or other special station locations is to create a station table for those locations.

SNEDIT will create a sounding file using the inbedded station location information if available. Otherwise, you must provide a pre-generated sounding file. Importing surface data always requires that SFCFIL be used in advance to create a file for the new dataset.

When you create your new GEMPAK file, the program asks for the name of a station file. For research datasets, it is probable that special sensor locations will not be an any of the distributed tables. When creating your own station tables follow the format used in provided station tables.

To import data research data, you must first determine the appropriate file format: Surface, Sounding or Grid. The format which you use depends on the type of data you wish to import. The GEMPAK editing programs will import data in columnar fields. Follow the format of the output of one of the listing programs: SFLIST, SNLIST or GDLIST when generating your ascii files for input.

Lets try importing some aircraft data.

Now that you have a GEMPAK data set, see about accessing the data set from a GUI.
