6.3 GEMPAK Mapping Programs: GPMAP
GPMAP is used to draw maps when data calculations are not necessary, and can be used to color fill defined regions. This program is also capable of plotting several miscellaneous data types such as Watches, Warnings, and Vector graphics.

One common use of GPMAP is to plot RADAR and SATELLITE images.

Another common use for GPMAP is for overlaying map files and titles on images generated from several programs.

Lets try it out!

  1. Display the current NIDS Base Reflectivity image for level 1, overlain with county boundaries, interstates, US highways, state highways, and rivers.

Another common use for GPMAP is to select a region for viewing using the CURSOR command. The CURSOR command can be used to assign values to the GAREA, POINT and CXSTNS variables. By entering at the GEMPAK prompt: CURSOR variable, the X window is turned in to a graphical input device where the values returned from the window are stored in the variable specified.

  1. Use GPMAP to plot the GOES-7 infrared image for Hurricane Bob (IR_910819_1801).
    1. Plot the full image contained in the dataset.

    2. Use the CURSOR GAREA command to select the southeast US region, and plot this closeup in a second window called "closeup".
