Generating MPEG animations

The Gempak gif driver can be used to generate multiple image frames which can be combined in MPEG format to provide annimation sequences. The process is similar to that for generating meta files for NTRANS, with the exception that a separate gif file is produced for each frame whereas the meta files can be appended to a single file.

Once the desired gif files are generated, the individual frames can be combined into a single MPEG file using one of several publically available encoders.

When generating the gif files, remember that MPEG files can grow very large, so you will probably want to specify a smaller output size than the default for the GF driver.

Tips for animations:

Use broader line widths for contours which will move from frame to frame.

Try to reduce the number of colors used.

Use bold fonts for labels, especially for dates which change.
