The Unidata Program Center Announces a Summer Workshop:

Using Instructional Technologies and Satellite Data for College-level Education in the Atmospheric and Earth Sciences

Co-Sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the UCAR COMET Program
Boulder, Colorado, 22-27 June 1997

Description
A five-day workshop is planned on the use of meteorological satellite remote sensing data as an information source for atmospheric and related scientific education and research. The workshop will demonstrate creative applications of satellite data for multi-media and computer-based teaching in atmospheric and environmental sciences. Invited speakers will make presentations on satellite-related research and teaching activities, remote sensing information resources, educational design principles and instructional technology. The workshop will also include group discussions on specific aspects of instructional design, and computer-based activities for development of instructional resources related to meteorological satellite data.

Organization
The Workshop Committee, co-chaired by Dr. Melanie Wetzel (Desert Research Institute) and Dr. Dave Dempsey (San Francisco State University), is composed of the Unidata Users Committee, COMET, and Unidata. The workshop is being offered by the UCAR Unidata and COMET Programs in Boulder, Colorado at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (Foothills Laboratory). Lodging accommodations (double occupancy) will be in Williams Village Towers on the University of Colorado campus.

Participants and Support
Any college or university faculty member with an interest in satellite meteorology is invited to attend. An attendance limit of 100 has been established; thus acceptance may be limited to one or two faculty members per institution. Attendees must provide and arrange for their own travel to and from the conference, but lodging and meals will be available without charge at the University of Colorado and UCAR locations. A small honorarium ($100 or less) may be granted to participants if funding permits.

Application Procedure
Complete the application form, and send a letter of application, including a statement of your interest in the workshop topic and, a description of your prior use of Unidata or other satellite information sources or software. Please include a 2-page vitae. Send the applications to:
