Accessing COMET Case Studies on the WWW for Research, Training, and Education

1. Introduction

Teaching meteorology is hard enough without struggling to find data for examples and exercises. Now easy access to a growing library of meteorological case study data is available through the World Wide Web (WWW). The availability of COMET case study data provides easy access to a comprehensive collection of data covering a variety of meteorological events. The case studies are being made available to enhance education, training, and research activities. Summaries of the events and sample exercises are available to give users a more detailed idea of what is available and suggest possible training topics.

This collaborative project is funded by the National Weather Service ( NWS) Office of Meteorology ( http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/) in order to foster cooperation between the NWS Science and Operations Officers (SOOs) and the university community. The project combines the efforts of three University Corporation for Atmospheric Research programs: the Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training ( COMET) [2]; the Joint Office for Science Support ( JOSS) [3]; and Unidata [4].

The case studies are developed by COMET and made available through JOSS's CODIAC data management system. Through the CODIAC WWW interface ( http://www.joss.ucar.edu/codiac/), users can search, browse, download, and order case study data. Unidata is working with the NWS, COMET, and JOSS to expand the community of case study users and to provide support and tools for users of the COMET case studies.
