Enhancing COMET Case Studies For Use In A Diverse Community

1. Introduction

The Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training (COMET) [2] has created meteorological data case studies to facilitate advanced meteorological education for Scientific Operations Officers (SOOs) in the modernized National Weather Service (NWS) forecast offices. These case studies are of interest to the university community for training and research purposes at their institutions. A joint project involving COMET, the Joint Office of Scientific Support (JOSS) [3], and the Unidata Program Center (UPC) [4] is using available technology, in the form of the Cooperative Distributed Interactive Atmospheric Catalog (CODIAC) system, to make the access of the COMET case study data easier, more flexible, and available to a wider range of users.

This project leverages the resources available among COMET, the JOSS, and the UPC to broaden the community of case study users, provide improved access and retrieval tools, and augment existing data sets through community collected data. The CODIAC system is a data management system with a platform independent World Wide Web (WWW) user interface that was developed by UCAR's JOSS to give researchers access to field campaign data.
