COMET will produce a diverse and comprehensive case study library in the hopes of enhancing research and training programs in a broad community. As case studies become available, they will be integrated into the CODIAC system and announced to the user community.
The UPC will work with the JOSS, COMET, and the expanded community to increase the ease of use and accessibility of the COMET case study data. Format translators will be developed to help users import case study data sets into the analysis and display systems used most commonly by SOOs and academicians. The format translators will be incorporated into the CODIAC system so that users can order data in the format most convenient for them. Additional tools to assist users will be developed as needed and browse capabilities will continue to evolve. Web pages will be developed and an electronic mailing list will be created to encourage the free exchange of information regarding the case studies. Recommendations on the enhancements of the case studies and on the user interface will be solicited as well as the contribution of data and metadata to augment the case studies.
To build a more efficient route to user assistance, a technical contact, Ethan Davis <edavis@unidata.ucar.edu>, has been dedicated for providing support to users, enhancing the user interface, and creating the necessary tools required for viewing the case studies. Coordination among COMET, Unidata, JOSS and NWS will be key to making the case studies a viable option for meteorological research and training and will allow wider access to the data collected from observing systems deployed as a component of the modernized National Weather Service.
