Enhancing COMET Case Studies For Use In A Diverse Community

3. Coordination

By joining efforts, COMET, JOSS and the UPC, will increase the accessibility of the COMET case study data sets to the NWS SOOs and the university community. This diverse community can capitalize on the potential value of these data sets for research and education purposes. Adopting the CODIAC system to distribute the case studies provides a convenient user interface for searching, browsing, and retrieving the case study data.

Unidata's role in this effort is to coordinate the collaboration among COMET, JOSS, and NWS as well as to build the community of users. By combining the talents from these programs, and seeking community feedback during the process, the COMET case studies will evolve into a richer product for use in the NWS Forecast Offices and at academic institutions.

The role of building a community of users is not foreign to Unidata. Unidata was borne out of a need by universities to access and use weather data and computer technologies related to teaching and research in the atmospheric sciences. From the very beginning of Unidata, emphasis was on community involvement through participation. Funded primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Unidata program continues to evolve with the changing technologies. It's up to the UPC to monitor the "pulse" on the community, to explore emerging technologies, and to assess the changing needs of the Unidata community, which now numbers over 150 sites nationwide.
