This Executive Summary covers the six month period from May-October 1999. The
reporting period was expanded to allow for redevelopment of the home page,
coordination of AWIPS (netCDF) format case study distribution, and general
reorganization of the Web site, including enhancements to the Other Cases of
Interest site. Enhancements include other datasets that are relevant to existing COMET Case Studies and other work related to our case studies. Finally, by extending the reporting period, survey compilation
and results have been included with this Executive Summary.
- Twenty (20) case studies are now available. All are
available for online search, browse, and FTP download.
- The last two cases have been made available in netCDF format
- The amount of data downloaded and the number of web hits
have both increased over the last six months. There is a dip in web hits and data ordered during the third quarter. This dip is attributed to no new cases offered during that time frame. With the Hurricane Floyd and Oklahoma City Tornado cases being offered in both a timely manner and in AWIPS compatible format we expect more activity at our sites.
In the six months since the last Executive Summary, several
things have been accomplished involving both case study data
and building the community of users.
Data and Infrastructure
- Hurricane Floyd, COMET Case 020, Sep 14-18, 1999, was announced to users and is available with full online access through the CODIAC system.
This case is also available in netCDF AWIPS compatible format
- Oklahoma City F5 Tornado, COMET Case 019, 3 May
1999, was announced to users and is available with full
online access through the CODIAC system.
This is the first case that the netCDF format was made available via the CODIAC system.
- Upper Mid-West Severe Weather, COMET Case 018, 30 May-June 1
1998, was announced to users and is available with full
online access through the CODIAC system.
Community Building
- The 1999 COMET Case Study Survey was completed providing information on software usage, platform usage, and generating contributions for outside cases.
COMET Case Study Survey results
- Elizabeth Page presented a paper, co-authored with Dolores Kiessling and Jeff Weber, at the National Weather Association in Biloxi, October 1999 , titled "New Directions for the COMET Case Study Library".
- Elizabeth Page and Unidata are continuing to work with the NCDC to establish an archive of NOAAPORT data to support case study development in the AWIPS era.
- The AMS Interactive Information and Processing Systems (IIPS) for Meteorology, Oceanography, and Hydrology will hold a special session which will be co-chaired by Unidata's Linda Miller. We invite and encourage all Unidata and
university collaborators to submit papers for the AMS-IIPS Special Session.
- Elizabeth Page will be presenting a paper co-authored with Dolores Kiessling and Jeff Weber: "COMET Case Study Library Into the New Millenium" at the special session
Our case study usage statistics (subscribers to the
casestudies e-mail list, tape requests, data downloads,
and web hits) continue to increase. For details on all the current usage statistics, see the
Detailed Statistics page.
Past statistics and current plots of web hits , data downloaded, and the "new" data ordered are also available on the
Case Studies Usage Statistics Page.
Development of more case studies continues, giving us more
case studies to load into the CODIAC system. Future cases
include:
- Case 21: Wichita Flood (October 31, 1998)
- Case 22: Pennsylvania Tornado (June 2, 1998)
- Case 23: Winter Severe Weather(November 9-11, 1998)
See the
Case Study Status page
We will continue our efforts to make the case
studies easier to access and use by the user community. These
efforts will include keeping our web site up to date and
helping with enhancements to the CODIAC system.
The COMET Case Study Survey generated responses that will help guide the future direction of the Case Study Library
Five individuals have expressed interest to contribute case studies. Topics range from Polar Meteorology to evaporative cooling from overnight rains.
In our continuing efforts to expand the user community, we
will continue to give presentations and publish papers on this
project.
We are tracking the data format issues arising from the NWS
modernization efforts. We have implemented AWIPS compatible
netCDF format so that future cases can be downloaded in raw data formats,
GEMPAK formats, or AWIPS formats.
