- Seven case studies are available with three available for
online search, browse, and FTP download.
- Web page hits continue to increase, especially by
noaa.gov users.
- Access to the COMET Case Studies via the WWW was
demonstrated at the Joint Unidata/COMET 1997 Summer
workshop.
- The CODIAC system continues to evolve. This includes the
development, currently underway, of a Java-based user
interface that leverages work being completed for the
NOAAServer project.
- The COMET Case Studies are becoming visible through
NOAAServer as they are loaded into CODIAC. This is due to
the close involvement of CODIAC in the NOAAServer project.
In the three months since the last Executive Summary, several
things have been accomplished involving both case study data
and building the community of users.
Data and Infrastructure
- COMET case study #007, a high plains snow event, was
released. In the past, at release time cases were only
available on 8mm tape. Case 007, at release time, was
available for full online access through the CODIAC system
as well as by 8mm tape.
- During the loading of COMET case study #007, tools for
loading case study data into CODIAC were improved. The time
to load case 007 was greatly reduced from the time involved
to load each of the previous two case studies.
- COMET case study #008, CA Flood of 1-3 January 1997, was
selected and nears release.
- COMET case study #006 will soon be available online.
- Julie developed several sample exercises as
suggestions on training uses of the case study data.
Community Building
- We gave a presentations at the
Joint Unidata/COMET 1997 Summer Workshop. This
presentation introduced the approximately 50 participants to
the COMET case study data and how to access it through the
CODIAC system. Julie introduced the sample exercises she
has developed.
- We wrote an article entitled
COMET Case Studies on the WWW for the
1997 Spring/Summer Unidata Newsletter.
- Three papers have been submitted; two of them have been
accepted at this time. First, a paper for the NWA
October 1997 meeting in Reno, NV was accepted as an oral
presentation. Second, a paper to the AMS 1998
Education Symposia was accepted as an electronic poster
presentation. Third, a paper to the AMS Weather and Forecast
Conference has been submitted.
- An article on the COMET Case Studies on the WWW project
has been submitted to the Aware publication.
- Several questions regarding the COMET Case Studies on the
WWW have been included in the SOO/SAC summer survey which
will be distributed by the end of July. Once the SOO/SAC
summer survey has been analyzed, a more detailed user survey
(to include the university community) will be conducted.
- From the community, we have received an on-station
exercise for Case 007 as well as some positive feedback.
Dan St. Jean, Forecaster, Boise, ID, contributed an
on-station exercise for case 007 and some
encouragement: "Thanks for doing the dirty work of putting
the case together". Steve Koch, NCSU, while at the Joint
Unidata/COMET 1997 Summer workshop, let us know that
"... this resource is a real gold mine."
- NWS Industrial Meteorology included the COMET Case Study
on the WWW project in their recent
Internet IM Update, July 11, 1997.
For details on the usage statistics (including subscribers
to the casestudies e-mail list, tape requests, data downloads,
and web hits), see the
Detailed Statistics page.
The web hit statistics show several surges in hits on our web pages.
The surge in May by the noaa.gov users and one in June mainly
by the ucar.edu users. The surge in May is probably due to a
mailing to all the people who received case study tapes before
the CODIAC system was being used (largely NOAA people). The
surge during June can be explained by the Joint Unidata/COMET
1997 summer workshop. Though the numbers decrease again after
May, the numbers are still higher than previous levels.
The future will bring the development of more case studies and
an increase in the number of case studies available through the
CODIAC system.
We will continue our efforts to make the case studies easier
to access and use by the user community. These efforts will include
keeping our web sites up to date and helping with the
enhancements to the CODIAC system.
In our continuing efforts to expand the user community, we
will continue to give presentations and publish papers on this
project. Already in store are the presentations at the NWA
conference in Reno, NV this October and at the AMS meeting in
Phoenix, AZ next January.
