Unidata projects and collaborations that have been completed or come to fruition. Archived project information is maintained for historical record. Many of the projects listed below contain links to the software or data result achieved during the project lifecycle.

CADIS

CADISThe Cooperative Arctic Data and Information Service (CADIS) project was tasked with the formation of a portal for Arctic Observing Network (AON) data discovery. The CADIS program was expanded to ACADIS, or Advanced CADIS, to focus on the diverse data needs of the Arctic research community.

CRAFT

Level IIThe Collaborative Radar Acquisition Field Test (CRAFT) project was tasked with creating access and distribution of NEXRAD Level II data, in near-real time. Level II NWS NEXRAD (Next Generation Radar) WSR-88D radar data is now available via the Unidata IDD.

LEAD

LEADThe Linked Environments for Atmospheric Discovery (LEAD) program was a NSF-funded, multi-institutional effort. The goal of LEAD was to create a TeraGrid Science Gateway, a framework for meteorological data indentfication and access. Work on LEAD continues at Indiana University with the Unidata Program Center providing data support.

netCDF/HDF Merger

NetCDF/HDF MergerUnidata and NCSA collaborated to combine the netCDF interface with the HDF5 format in order to create and deploy software that will take advantage of the widespread use and simplicity of netCDF and the generality and performance of HDF5. The result of this project was the creation of netCDF-4, which can be utilized in high performance computing scenarios, such as parallel I/O.

NLDM

NLDMUnidata investigated the use of a Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) for the purpose of data relay. It was determined a NNTP-based Local Data Manager (LDM ) would be impractical due to the high cost to the community of changing protocols. This project is no longer active.

OPeNDAP/NetCDF Integration

OPeNDAP/NetCDF IntegrationThe goal of the OPeNDAP and NetCDF Integration project aims to integrate the OPeNDAP software and Data Access Protocol (DAP) with Unidata's netCDF library. The result of the project was the creation of the netCDF library with bundled DAP support - which means any software that uses the library can now read from any type of DAP server (not only the server developed by OPeNDAP).

SuomiNet

SuomiNetSuomiNet is an international network of GPS receivers located at universities and other locations to provide precipitable water vapor measurements and other geodetic and meteorological information. SuomiNet data is available from Unidata using the IDD.

THREDDS

THREDDSThe goal of the Thematic Realtime Environmental Distributed Data Services (THREDDS) project was to provide metadata and access to real-time and archived scientific datasets from a number of distributed data sources. The project achieved its goal in the web-based THREDDS Data Server.

Tropical Cyclone IDV

TC-IDVThe Tropical Cyclone version of the IDV was jointly developed by the Unidata Program Center and the Shanghai Typhoon Institute (STI). An outgrowth of this work is the ability to display and analyze the Automated Tropical Cyclone Forecasting (ATCF) data from the National Hurricane Center in the IDV.
