Implementations and Work Underway on
Catalogs, Catalog Servers,
Discovery Center Entries,
and Client Implementations

Last updated: May 12, 2003

This summary document serves as a focal point for end-users to be able to find, access, and use the THREDDS datasets, but it also should help collaborating partners can use and learn from current activities. The activities are divided into the following categories:

An effort is being made to include all the work known. If some work is not included, please let us know so the page can be updated.

Catalog servers

The following sites are illustrations of catalogs containing enhanced metadata (here in the form of NCML, netCDF Markup Language which has been developed in conjunction with the NCAR part of the Earth System GRID, ESD, initiative) is incorporated into the THREDDS catalogs:

ISCCP (International Satellite Clould Climatology Project) monthly means/T42 metadata entry:

Discovery Centers

Client software for accessing THREDDS catalogs and data servers

Work Underway

SSEC (Space Science and Engineering Center) University of Wisconsin, Madison: Working with the Unidata THREDDS staff on implementation of catalog system for ADDE (Abstract Distributed Data Distribution Environment) servers. Also using XML code library to incorporate THREDDS data and catalog access into WXWISE applets. One such prototype applet, referenced among the client list above, is a proof of concept for applet access to data on remote THREDDS servers.

NCDC (National Climatic Data Center) is populating their server with NOAAport operational data and making it available via a GrADS/DODS (GDS) server. They plan to implement a catalog servers soon and add NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) experimental model output in a few months. They will also implement a Live Access Server component, and a NetCDF DODS Server. Additionally, NCDC is currently archiving the NCEP Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) Spectral Statistical Interpolation initialization data for a boundary, model restart and rerun capability. Also, the NCDC will soon begin a NOMADS disk to NCDC Archive Interface to service selected archived data sets.

UAH (University of Alabama Huntsville) has two example catalogs available:

but they are working with the Unidata THREDDS staff to work out problems building full catalogs for their Passive Microwave Online Network of Data and Services (POND). This is one of the largest and most dynamic collection in the THREDDS community so it is taxing the initial catalog generation tools. Other problems uncovered include limitation in the service and data type support in the catalog.

GMU (George Mason University) has the Unidata LDM running they are working to inject the real-time data into their GrADS/DODS (GDS) server and implementing a THREDDS server for cataloging the data.

ARM (Atmospheric Radiation Measurement) have set up a DODS data and catalog server for some of their datasets, but it needs more testing with a variety of clients before it is released for public use.

DLESE (Digital Library for Earth System Education) have added metadata fields with controlled vocabularies that make it more straightforward to incorporate called data and analysis tools as library resources and indicate that the resources are for special audiences such as data specialistsand media specialists. These are new vocabulary terms that will eventually be searchable with our new metadata framework and apply to many of the potential THREDDS resource contributions.

PMEL (Pacific Marine Environment Lab) The LAS (Live Access Server) development group has made a commitment to have THREDDS catalog output from LAS servers by June 1.

DMWG (the NCAR Data Management Working Group) has started a prototype effort of cataloguing some UCAR datasets of interest according to THREDDS, and at the same time developing a search and discovery engine that uses generic metadata content (for example Dublin Core) to locate datasets and return the corresponding THREDDS catalog.
