MeteoForum: Extending UCAR's Outreach throughout the Americas

If you were an atmospheric sciences student at a Latin or South American, or Caribbean University today, you might not have access to the same datasets and training and research tools as those that are readily available to your North American counterparts. Work at Unidata in association with COMET® aims to make the same research and teaching tools currently available in the U.S. universities throughout the Americas.

Two distinct but closely intertwined projects are working to achieve this goal. The first is occurring within the Unidata Program Center where, commensurate with its current funding proposal to the NSF, Unidata proposed to broaden data and tools distribution as well as providing support to educational institutions in WMO Region III. Here is a link to a paper by Tom Yoksas and Mohan Ramamurthy that contains more information on this effort.

The second and more visible strand of the effort, MeteoForum, is a pilot project that is being developed jointly by the COMET® and Unidata programs of UCAR using funds provided by the director of the UCAR Office of Programs (Spangler, Fulker, 2001). Unidata's role is to provide data, tools, and community leadership for enhanced Earth-system education and research. COMET® will provide educational materials for enhanced learning. Working jointly we will help the Regional Meteorological Training Centers (RMTC) to assume more prominent roles in their home countries while also enabling them to work more closely with their national universities on basic and continuing education. Elen Cutrim (Western Michigan University) a member of the Unidata Users Committee, is pictured in the photo on the left. She is actively involved in and is the focal point for the educational outreach portion of MeteoForum. Read more.

We also feature UPC staff member Tom Yoksas (right), whose co-authored paper is referenced above, and who, together with Tim Spangler of COMET, is actively engaged in assisting existing RMTCs. Earlier this year Tom traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica to assist in the installation of a satellite dish.

Unidata Equipment Awards

2003 marked the first year of Unidata’s administration of the highly-successful community Equipment Awards Program, once administered by NSF/ATM division. A contractual requirement for successful applicants is to submit an article for publication either in the Unidata Newsletter or publication to the portal. The article is to be submitted within a year of receiving equipment funds. As specified in the RFP the article should state how recipient departments have used the equipment toward their Unidata-related needs and applications. The intent of this requirement is to encourage other groups to participate both in the Unidata community and communicate the benefits of the Equipment Awards program. by showing the benefits of participating.

Here are links to some articles posted thus far from the 2003 awardees.

State University of New York--Albany
University of Northern Iowa
City College of New York
St. Louis University

The 2004 RFP link is here. We anticipate that the 2005's RFP will be posted in late December 2004, and the proposals will be due in February 2005.
