Welcome to the first edition of the Unidata Program Center's on-line newsletter

We are launching this online newsletter in response to a request (in the form of an action item [3]) from the Unidata Users Committee at its March meeting. We hope that its content reflects your Unidata-related interests while introducing you to projects, new developments, and people within the Program Center and the community.

Since this is a first and you, our community members, are our readers, we'd like to hear your comments. Please send them—good or bad. We want this newsletter to reflect your interests while providing you with useful information. Send comments to info@unidata.ucar.edu.

Committee News

The Users Committee is planning a regional workshop for June 8-9 at Millersville University. Its purpose is to provide introductory and advanced training in the use of Unidata’s Integrated Data Viewer (IDV), and to present use cases of IDV and other Unidata services (data and tools) in the classroom. The cutoff date for registration is May 15. More details are available on the workshop web page.
The Unidata Policy Committee meets in Boulder at the end of May. Watch this space for the agenda.

High Resolution Radar Data Now Available Using Unidata’s LDM Technology

A long term collaborative project that Unidata has been pursuing since 1998, reached a milestone in the last week. Read the how the project evolved and what it may mean to you, the end user.

By adding the two software engineers, Unidata took a crucial step toward accomplishing the tasks outlined for it in the LEAD ITR effort (see LEAD announcement ). Unidata's role in LEAD is to develop some of the key technologies that will provide access to the LEAD environment. LEAD's overall goal is providing on-demand computing for anyone who needs or wants to know about hazardous weather systems. Doug and Tom are working to set up Unidata data infrastructure and tools on LEAD test beds. Their primary goal is to enable Unidata tools (the IDV, THREDDS, OPeNDAP, ADDE among others) to work well within the LEAD Grid and Web Services environment. Tom Balzer (pictured left) will be developing the testbeds while Doug Lindholm (pictured at right) will be developing the tools. Both Doug and Tom bring important knowledge and skills to the project. Doug joined the project after years with the Research Applications Program (RAP). Experience in meteorological data analysis and visualization and distributed software development provided Doug with valuable insight and tools in the LEAD project's development while Tom's years in NOAA's Wave Propagation Lab's (now the Environmental Technology Lab) LIDAR group provide him background in meteorological data and processing. Other experience building NASA and DoD sponsored systems give him understanding in automated data acquisition, processing, and product distribution.

Doug and Tom have been in the UPC for a relatively short period of time, but they seem to feel comfortable and at home in our professional setting, and we are delighted to have them here.

Annual Training Workshops

Meet Unidata's Meeting and Travel Coordinator

Many of you will have and others already have had, the pleasure of working with our new meeting and travel coordinator, Sandra Petrie (pictured at left). After several years with NCAR's Office of the Directorate, Sandra joined the Unidata staff in late winter. Her experience and expertise are assets that greatly facilitate Unidata's planning and execution of meetings and travel. Next year she will also take over as the coordinator for Unidata's Community Equipment Awards program. Sandra will be located in FL4 Room 1400 once some staff's migration to the south side of the building begins (now scheduled for June 28).

Sandra's studies have included web development, so look for some improved web design as you browse Unidata's web pages in the coming months, because not only does she have the expertise, she has as well a keen interest in graphic design.
