Ah, so of course now I realise that if I had waited for something to be 
rendered by an onscreen canvas, then its AffineTransform would be 
correct, since at this point it would have correct width and height 
values.  So I added a displayListener interested in FRAME_DONE events 
and the screen coords are as expected!
