Just a brief comment:

My home HP laptop uses an ATI card (XPRESS 200M with 128MB memory) and
I could not be happier with the 3D performance when using the IDV and
OpenGL.  I should also add that I now experience very few problems
with my TP R40 at work since opting in for the latest video drivers.

Just lucky I guess ;-)
